SONGWRITERS NIGHT is a salon-style music series for musical theatre writers to present 3-4 songs of their choosing from a show in the developmental stage.
The purpose of this series is to build community while strengthening individual repertoire for musical theatre writers in a friendly, safe, and casual atmosphere. No formal feedback is offered, as the general tone of the event should be fun and inspiring.
Writers can perform the material or invite rehearsed performers at their discretion. Exposition preceding each song (in the form of dialogue from the scene or simple narration) is advised so that the audience can follow the basic storytelling points of the piece.
Selected songwriters may then have an opportunity to present a 20-minute piece of their musical in SONGWRITERS SHOWCASE, a public performance held at the end of the year.
SONGWRITERS NIGHT is held three times a year.
Every month, Playlight holds a table reading of a selected piece with the purpose of hearing the text out loud. From first drafts to previously-produced plays, authors and directors alike gain a fresh perspective of the work along with generous feedback essential for the next step in the development process.
Attendance at the Spotlight Reading Series is exclusively reserved for Playlight Theatre Company members.
